What we do ...
The functions of the Financial Services Authority include:
- authorising firms and approving individuals;
- setting regulatory rules and giving guidance;
- supervising firms and enforcing regulatory requirements; and
- securing the appropriate degree of protection for consumers.
The functions of the Office of Fair Trading include:
- investigating and dealing with breaches of consumer protection law, in partnership with local authority trading standards services;
- investigating and dealing with breaches of competition law;
- investigating markets which appear not to be working well for consumers; and
- licensing organisations which offer consumer credit.
The functions of the Financial Ombudsman Service include:
- providing an alternative to the courts for consumers with financial services disputes;
- resolving individual disputes quickly and with minimum formality; and
- awarding redress to consumers, where appropriate.
