What we do ...

The functions of the Financial Services Authority include:

  • authorising firms and approving individuals;
  • setting regulatory rules and giving guidance;
  • supervising firms and enforcing regulatory requirements; and
  • securing the appropriate degree of protection for consumers.

The functions of the Office of Fair Trading include:

  • investigating and dealing with breaches of consumer protection law, in partnership with local authority trading standards services;
  • investigating and dealing with breaches of competition law;
  • investigating markets which appear not to be working well for consumers; and
  • licensing organisations which offer consumer credit.

The functions of the Financial Ombudsman Service include:

  • providing an alternative to the courts for consumers with financial services disputes;
  • resolving individual disputes quickly and with minimum formality; and
  • awarding redress to consumers, where appropriate.
